Lynnfield-Based Electrical Contractor’s Milestone Anniversary Gains National Attention

JM Electrical was recently featured in Wicked Local and AOL celebrating its 40th anniversary serving Greater Boston’s commercial construction industry. The article, written by Joanna K. Tzouvelis for Wicked Local and subsequently picked up by AOL, highlights the family-owned company’s journey from its founding in 1985 by Paul Guarracino to its current position as a leading specialized commercial electrical contractor.

Over four decades, JM Electrical has completed more than 25,000 projects representing 6 million man-hours of work. The company’s portfolio includes high-profile developments such as the MWRA Deer Island facility, Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, the Big Dig, Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ headquarters in the Seaport District, the 61-story Four Seasons at One Dalton, Logan Airport Terminal E, Cambridge Crossing, and most recently, the full building management system installation at the 51-story South Station Tower.

The article emphasizes the successful second-generation transition, with Paul Guarracino’s three sons, Matthew (CEO), John (COO), and Andrew (Project Manager), continuing their father’s legacy. Matthew shares in the piece that the greatest lessons learned from his father are that it takes hard work to be successful, it’s important to treat employees like family, and building long-standing relationships with clients is essential to sustained success.

Safety is highlighted as a cornerstone of the company’s operations. In 2025, JM Electrical was ranked the 9th safest electrical contractor in the nation by the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and received the NECA Safety Excellence Award, the only Greater Boston contractor to achieve this national recognition. Matthew notes that the most important job in leading a company is to make sure everyone goes home safe, adding, “That certainly keeps me up at night. We have a lot of people working on a lot of different places, sometimes under difficult conditions.”

The article also discusses the company’s commitment to staying ahead on safety procedures and protocols, with job sites constantly monitored by JM Electrical’s health and safety manager. The company employs more than 200 union electricians who are proud members of IBEW Local 103, a partnership that has remained strong since the company’s founding.

JM Electrical’s approach is guided by six foundational principles: safety, quality, relationships, people, accountability, and communication. As Matthew explains, old-school values of dependability, responsiveness, and building trust carry significant weight. “They trust us and we have their best interest in mind and we’ll deliver the project successfully for them,” he says.
