M Electrical was recently featured in 01940 The Magazine in a profile celebrating the company’s 40th anniversary and the Guarracino family story behind it. Written by Amanda Lurey, the piece traces the journey from founder Paul Guarracino’s leap of faith in December 1985 to the thriving second-generation business it is today.
Paul, a Wentworth Institute of Technology graduate who came from a family of electricians, named the company after his two eldest sons, Matthew and John. As he put it with a laugh, Andrew “snuck in a year later,” and if you look closely at the JM Electrical logo, there’s an A in there for him too. The three brothers grew up watching their father build the business from the ground up, sweeping warehouses, delivering stock, and working job sites in the summers. Yet despite the demands of entrepreneurship, Paul rarely missed a baseball game or soccer match. He encouraged his sons to find their own passions, and each eventually found their own path back to the company.
Today, Matthew serves as Principal and CEO, John as Principal and COO, and Andrew as Project Manager, each bringing a distinct background and perspective to their roles. The succession plan that transferred leadership took seven years to complete, and the values established by Paul remain at the core of everything: accountability, communication, people, quality, relationships, and safety. As Matthew describes it, “There’s no I’s here, only we’s.”
The article highlights what makes JM Electrical’s culture so distinctive in an industry known for turnover. The company has employees who have been with the team for 35 to 37 years, a testament to the environment the Guarracinos have worked hard to build. “We have a saying here that ‘We hire to retire,'” Matthew shares. That sense of family extends well beyond the Guarracino name, annual company outings bring hundreds of people together, and the leadership team prides itself on knowing not just their employees but their families as well.
On the business side, the article recognizes JM Electrical’s contributions to some of Greater Boston’s most iconic projects, including the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, the Big Dig, the modernization of Logan Airport Terminal E, and the Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. The company was also recognized last year as the ninth safest electrical contractor in the nation by the National Electrical Contractors Association, a reflection of its deep commitment to ensuring every employee comes home safely.
The piece closes with a look toward the future, the third generation is already in the picture, with Paul’s grandchildren growing up alongside the business just as their fathers once did. Whether any of them eventually join JM Electrical remains to be seen, but as the article notes, the foundation for the next chapter may already be quietly taking shape, one family moment at a time.
