Five-Year Infrastructure Project Supports Boston’s Transformative Mixed-Use Development

JM Electrical recently completed a comprehensive five-year Building Management System installation at South Station Tower, a landmark 51-story development that represents one of the most significant construction projects in downtown Boston’s recent history.

The company was featured in Boston Real Estate Times for its complex infrastructure work on the project, which required meticulous coordination and technical expertise across multiple building systems and uses. JM Electrical’s scope encompassed control wiring installation for the building’s management and mechanical systems throughout commercial office floors, luxury residential units, and a nearly one-acre rooftop garden with work performed at heights reaching 700 feet.

The project presented unique challenges due to its scale and the integration of multiple building functions within a single structure. In addition to the tower’s commercial and residential components, JM Electrical completed critical infrastructure work within the five-level parking garage and contributed to upgrades that increased MBTA bus terminal capacity by approximately 50 percent, enhancing service for thousands of daily commuters who pass through South Station daily.

The successful completion of South Station Tower comes as JPMorgan Chase recently announced it will serve as the anchor commercial tenant, occupying more than eight floors and bringing up to 1,000 employees to the building beginning in early 2028. The financial services firm plans to add hundreds of new jobs in the coming years, signaling a major economic boost for downtown Boston and reinforcing the city’s standing as a destination where global companies choose to invest and grow.

“This project has been one of the most challenging and rewarding I’ve been a part of,” said Connor Harris, Project Manager at JM Electrical. “In a building of this scale, daily coordination across trades was essential to achieving a successful outcome.”

The South Station Tower project required close collaboration among multiple partners, including Automated Logic, Hines, Suffolk, NKM Industries, JC Higgins Corp., and New Era Technology. This partnership approach enabled the successful integration of sophisticated building automation systems across the development’s diverse functions.

South Station Tower represents the future of integrated building solutions in Greater Boston, combining commercial office space, luxury residences, public transit infrastructure, and public amenities in a single transformative development. JM Electrical’s work on the building’s management systems ensures efficient, reliable operation of the mechanical infrastructure that supports this complex mixed-use environment.
